Septic System Guide

Our Summer Septic Re-Inspection Program

Most sewage disposal systems in Gravenhurst are regulated through the Ontario Building Code and could have a negative impact on the environment if not properly maintained.

During the months of May, June, July, and August the Town of Gravenhurst runs a Septic re-inspection program throughout the municipality.

The objective of the program is to help keep our lakes and ground water pollution free.
One way we can achieve this is by working together with property owners, providing information awareness pertaining to their sewage disposal systems. We collect and share field data pertaining to sewage systems in the Gravenhurst area.

During the re-inspection of sewage systems numerous observations may be noted:

  • Foul odours coming from the sewage system
  • Ponding on the septic bed or around the sewage system location
  • Improper leaching pit for grey water
  • Unusually green or thick grass growing in on or around the leaching bed area
  • Ensure that trees are 3m from the runs in the septic bed
  • Drilled well must be 15m from sewage system and dug wells must be 30m from sewage system
  • Privy’s, Leaching Pits, Septic tanks/beds, and holding tanks must follow the Ontario Building Code requirements

The way you treat your septic system will influence how long the system lasts and how well it functions. Depending on the use of the system a septic tank should be pumped out every 3 to 5 years.

The following Check List Guide was compiled from 421 sewage systems inspected in Gravenhurst during 2011.
