Literacy Collection

The ‘Learn to Read’ Literacy Collection is an assortment of reading resources intended to help parents and caregivers to explicitly teach reading skills to their children, and then, practice them. The resources in the collection include decodable literacy strips, books & passages, reading games, dry-erase re-usable print-outs, phonics readers and more. As a part of the collection, parents can also complete a free reading assessment with their child to pin-point exactly what literacy skills they have mastered and which ones they need help with. After which, Library staff can recommend a perfectly leveled resource for that family/child. Please note that there are many components to being an effective reader, and this collection focuses on decoding skills (how to read/sound-out words) rather than language comprehension.

To create a one stop shop for families to meet all of their learning to read needs.
To provide parents with information on the Science of Reading and how children learn to read so they can better teach their child.
To provide teachers with support and learning aids for their students outside of the classroom.
To create a collection that is both effective for families and manageable for staff.
To provide our community with a tangible resource they can access to help combat the summer slide and covid-19 academic setbacks.
