Centennial Centre closed for the weekend

An extreme amount of snow on the roof of the Centennial Centre and a rainy forecast for the weekend have prompted the Town of Gravenhurst to close the facility for Saturday and Sunday.

“We are taking this step out of an abundance of caution,” Infrastructure Services director Andrew Stacey said. “We had the roof inspected earlier this week and have determined that the snow load, combined with a heavy rainfall, could cause a structural integrity issue that would put public safety at risk. We could wind up with too much weight on the roof. As a result, we have made the decision to close the building for the weekend. We know this is a disruption, but we simply can’t take any chances.”

Town staff will keep an eye on the facility over the weekend and are optimistic the centre will reopen Monday.

“The Centennial Centre’s roof drains are open so rain and snow melt can drain off. We will monitor the situation to determine if any additional action is required,” Stacey said. “But at this point we anticipate normal operations will resume next week.”

Updates about the situation will be posted on the town’s website and social media channels Monday.
