Marriage Licences

If you wish to get married within the Province of Ontario, you are required to obtain a Marriage Licence. Marriage Licences expire 90 days after the date they are issued and is valid for use, anywhere within Ontario.

The Town of Gravenhurst issues Marriage Licences and conducts Civil Marriage Ceremonies.

If you wish to apply for a Marriage Licence, you can either submit an online application, or you can bring in a paper-based application. Marriage Licences are issued by appointment only.

Appointments are held at the Municipal Town Hall located at 3 - 5 Pineridge Gate, Gravenhurst, ON P1P 1Z3

Cost of Marriage Licence: $156.00 (subject to change every January 1)

You must be at least 18 years or older, or have parental/guardian consent at age 16/17, in order to obtain a Marriage Licence.

Online Application

  1. Apply for Marriage Licence online. 
  2. Book an in-person appointment at least 2 business days from the time of submitting your online application. 
  3. Applicant(s)* attend in-person appointment. Make sure to bring all original pieces of ID and documents that were uploaded in the online application. 

*Note: Only one applicant is required to attend the in-person appointment, but they must bring all original applicable ID’s and documents with them, as required in the application, for both applicants. 

Paper-Based Application

  1. Both applicants must completely fill out a Marriage Licence application and sign it. 
  2. Book an in-person appointment.
  3. Applicant(s)** attend in-person appointment. Applicant(s) must bring the physical application, all applicable original ID’s, and documents to their appointment.

**Note: If the application has been completely filled out and signed by both applicants, only one applicant needs to attend the appointment. Original ID’s and documents for both parties must accompany whomever attends the appointment. If you wish to fill out the application at the municipal office, both applicants must attend the appointment.

Provide 2 pieces of government-issued identification for each person getting married. 1 piece of identification must include your photo.

Examples of government-issued identification:

  • Government-issued Birth Certificate, including any change of name certificates
  • Valid Passport
  • Record of Immigrant Landing
  • Canadian Citizenship Card
  • Valid Driver's Licence
  • Valid Ontario Photo Card

Information you should know before the Town issues a Marriage Licence is as follows:

Divorce issued in Canada:

An original Certificate of Divorce must be presented with an original signature and seal.

Out of Country Divorce:

Approval is required from the Office of the Registrar General.
